Any plumbers on here?

Moved into a new house about 3 months ago – the boiler is about 25 years old and the house also has a large water tank to heat hot water. I want to get the boiler changed to a combi, but really have no idea how much it should cost to have it installed.

My uneducated view is that a reasonable boiler costs about £1,300, may take 2/3 days to install (or is it less than that?!) at circa £200 a day, so labour plus boiler should be about £1,900. Are there any other parts that need to be bought? If so, what are they and how much do they cost? I’m just confused that I’m being quoted £3,500 and I know the boiler only costs £1,300, so surely they cant be charging £2,200 for labour?

Any advice welcome! If any plumbers want to quote, im based in Leigh and would like the work done anytime during the week commencing 4th March!

My cousin did mine. Charged me nothing except:

1. Meal out with Mrs £250
2. Toys for kids £400
3. Down payment on tri annual holidays £1200

And costs, labour, and out-of-season expenses.

£18,500 in all.

Quite reasonable I thought. But it does leak a bit and still doesn't quite rise out of cool/luke-warm. I'll WHOmail you his number.

My advice would be use a local company for your gas fit as the they will come back and fix any leaks as part of their job !


My advice would be don't use a company that leaves a leak on the 'gas fit' !

I think Gas Safe & HSE might just agree with that too.

You'd be lucky if the company could find whats left of your house to fix any leak.

I literally had this done yesterday !

Old 30 year old boiler out and new Combi in - I was quoted 2900 which included VAT and got a friend to do it for same price minus VAT.

The actual labour was £700 but in reality they get better price on boiler and materials they quote and take about 45% total cost for themselves as take home!

Its 2 days work - or one very long day for 2 fitters. be careful once fitted that the old low pressure system is checked as new system will be fitted to mains and be a lot more powerful. Chances are this will shake the old system a little and within 24 hours you could get a leak most commonly on toilet valve and shower !!

Mine was toilet which had a low pressure valve which now needs a high pressure valve ! So leak into kitchen below ! A local Guy coming out to fit it on Monday as the mate who did me favour loves miles away !

My advice would be use a local company for your gas fit as the they will come back and fix any leaks as part of their job !

Ha Ha Ha... .thing is Playoff thats it's back working today... lovely and piping hot water !! Which is good as no excuse on Mrs N/Sold washing up some saucepans.... guarantee will be cold as you like tomorrow!

Really depends on make, model and exactly what's wrong Sold.
A flow switch can be £20, a diaphragm can be £5 or a diverter valve can be £150.

Obviously all plus labour costs which apparently are likely to include:

1. Meal out with Mrs £150
2. Toys for kids £200
3. Down payment on tri annual holidays £500

Have you tried putting the heating on then trying the hot water. It can be a very temporary fix but can sometimes get you out some hot water.

Now can I get back to my beer while sunning ones self in the Carribean. And for the record, there was no down payment, it was all paid for upfront with notes ;-)

Cheers Playoff.. what rough price would I be looking at?? Obviously NOT mates rates? Saying that I think my missus is ringing up our bruv in law who is a plumber so might be FAMILY rates

I've had about 8 boilers fitted in domestic properties in the last year. The cost has been about £3000 each time. This was for a bog-standard boiler. It wasn't my money so I didn't really care about the cost and the gas-fitter knew that. They also knew I'd have other work for them so they probably didn't stick their arm in too far. They also did them for me within a couple of days of asking.

So yeah £3500 sounds very plausible but at the low end of piss taking.

Sounds like a hot water flow switch or aqua sensor .

No fault code or flashing warning light.... just the light does not come on when the hot water tap is turned on (when it does not work)... when it works the light obviously does come on... like I said no rhyme or reason

What make and model number is it? Does it display a fault code?

It sounds like it could be a faulty valve or thermostat.

Actually if there is an actual plumber on here quick question.... Combi... heating is fine... hot water over the past month has been hit and miss... sometimes piping hot and others stone cold (the hot water light/indicator does not come on the boiler)... like I said.. one day fine.. the next not... no rhyme or reason to it... gather it must be some sort of indicator/switch in the boiler?? What am I looking at ?

I've been quoted £3,200 to replace my old boiler (not the wife) with a combi. The combi will be in a different room to the old one, so some of the cost will be for pipework.

Play... no it's a tax issue.... 5 figures so worth all the grief... daft thing is they admit they owe him... just that it's been nearly a year and he's still not been sorted... so he's had enough and going after them

Do you really need to change to a Combi ?
It would probably be cheaper to upgrade your existing system boiler

He''s not the one that took them to court over his 'self employed status' is he ?

Looks like old Charlie Mullins might have to go back to fitting a few boilers himself after losing the case.

I can just imagine the customers face, if he turned up to do some plumbing in his Bentley !
